MINDSET

Within my design practice I like to keep a healthy balance of intuition and data driven approaches. Intuition seeds creativity and helps make progress when data is fuzzy or non-existent. It gives life to product personality and taste. Data keeps intuition from going too far in an ambiguous direction. It brings focus to explorations and drives user adoption and engagement through feedback loops.

To me good design is intellectually rigorous and emotionally engaging.

We are building a suite of innovative smart home services. As the discipline lead, I am responsible for setting the vision and bar for all touchpoints within the customer journey.

DESIGN LEADERSHIP

Each designer on my team is a generalist, capable of working on all aspects of the design process. My experience is that this encourages the designers to probe wider and deeper into the problem/solution space. It exposes cross-connections and insights that are hard to come by any other way. It also provides the designers a sense of ownership critical to their sense of professional growth. On this path proactive mentorship is key for designers early on in their career.

As part of the Plume executive team directly reporting to the CEO, I set goals and processes for the organization and manage their execution.

In my five years at Plume, the company has grown from around 30 to 300 people, expanding footprint from two to five countries. Each stage of growth has brought up its unique set of challenges and opportunities. They have made me stretch beyond my wildest dreams and grounded my appreciation for a system oriented approach to problem solving. As a result, I have grown manifold as a leader championing innovative ideas, processes and people.
